Big Ben - wież…a zegarowa w Londynie w Wielkiej Brytanii

Nazwa początkowo odnosiła się do dzwonu ze St Stephen Tower (ang. Wież…a św. Szczepana), zwanej również… the Clock Tower (ang. Wież…a Zegarowa), należ…acej do Pałacu Westminsterskiego. Obecnie nazwa Big Ben odnosi się często zarówno do dzwonu, jak i zegara i samej Wież…y.

Historia

Budowę tej neogotyckiej wież…y podjęto zaraz po tym, jak znaczna część Pałacu spłonęła w 1834 roku. Projektantami byli m.in. Charles Barry i Augustus W. Pugin. Dzwon nazwany został od imienia sir Benjamina Halla, głównego komisarza robót w 1858 roku. Inne źródła podają, ż…e ta zwyczajowa nazwa pochodzi od imienia Benjamina Caunta, popularnego w owym czasie atlety.

Ostateczne otwarcie nastąpiło 31 maja 1859 roku.

Big Ben - the clock tower in London, Great Britain

The name first referred to the bell in St. Stephen's Tower, also called the Clock Tower, belonging to Westminster Palace. Presently the name "Big Ben" often refers to the bell, the clock, and the tower itself.

History

The construction of this neo-gothic tower was undertaken just after a significant part of the palace went up in flames in 1834. The architects were, among others, Charles Barry and Augustus W. Pugin. The bell was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the main commissioner of the work, in 1858. Some sources indicate that the customary name comes from Benjamin Caunt, a popular athlete of the time. The grand opening followed on May 31, 1859.

The bell weighs 13 tons. The clock is the largest in Great Britain. The four clock faces each have a diameter of 7.5m and clock hands 4.25m long. It indicates the time almost exactly and every quarter-hour it rings out a melody based on the one from the bell of St. Mary's Church (University Church) in Cambridge - it is a variation on several beats from Handel's Messiah. At midnight on December 31, 1923, the sound of the bell could be heard for the first time on BBC radio.

"Big Ben" is also the name of a backdoor program, i.e. a Trojan horse, which infects even computers using a NAT. It communicates via protocol GG 6.0. Presently, the newest version is called BiG BeN GG v2.3/2006.
