The ATOM II is a direct steal from Howard Mottin's ATOM from the late 60s. Long, hard use of the original design and a couple of the models shown here led to the revisions shown in this plan, ie, landing gear placement and fuselage construction. If you don't feel like constructing the fuse as shown, just cut a 3/8 profile, and take 5-minute epoxy to the flying sessions.
The original used a 15 glow for power, but we found that an 09 (l.5cc) diesel allowed for better speed control, quieter operation, and lower fuel costs. On 50' lines, it was easy for the instructor to start the engine, release the aircraft, jog to the center of the circle, just in time for the model to lift off, and instruction to begin; no helper necessary, but if you are teaching more than one to fly, participation of the other students is a good idea.
Enforce the idea that ATTITUDE, not ALTITUDE, is important. The long fuselage makes it easy to see whether the model is level or not, both for the instructor and the student. On a good evening, I have been able to instruct a dozen Cub-Scouts to a point where they were able to solo with this model. Once basic level flight is mastered, there is not much else that this model will do. Loops are not recommended, and inverted flight is out of the question, but that never was the purpose of this model.
Two of these have been built, and literally hundreds of kids learned basic level flight over a period of 12 years. Many of these students went on to other model flying activities, including combat, scale, and RC.
