in english: it is front, short but definitely longer than others short vowels. Read:
bad - zły and bed - łóż ko.
Precisely you will not read the first word as clear a, but something between a and b - and in the transcription; there is schwa. Bed - here we've got clear e - to say it in english you have to spread your lips.
You can see schwa in words as : flat; bad, ass, acting, fancy, grammar.
You have to train it to say it correctly.
