Attending a few language classes is not enough to master a language. Studying (and mastering) a foreign language requires effort, persistence, and patience. But if you focus your energies wisely and make some changes in your habits, you can use your class time to perfect the language much more quickly.

1. Use your vocabulary lists creatively

Writing something down cements the learning in your mind, and making lists of words is a great way to practice. But you know what's even better? Using those lists!

Even if you've signed up for classes with a friend or made friends with someone from your country, if you want to learn, you'll have to resist the temptation to put yourself in class with them. Why? When you work with someone who speaks your mother tongue, you don't put yourself to the test, and in a difficult situation, you will be tempted to use your own language. On the other hand, being brave and connecting with someone new and different - with whom you cannot converse - forces you to work harder to understand and be understood in your new language. 3. Talk a lot
Now, we're not saying that you have to be that student who interrupts, talks non-stop, and takes control of the lesson. That's not being generous with your classmates' time. However, if you refuse to interact, you are not doing your learning any favors. Remember that the teacher is there to help you: if you have questions, doubts, or queries, speak up! Articulating the problem out loud (especially in a foreign language) is an excellent speaking practice in itself and often helps you see the solution before it is given to you. When we learn a new language, we don't get better by dwelling on our doubts but solving them. And who knows? Maybe someone else in the class has the same question and will also benefit from the teacher's answer.
4. Be consistent
You know what happens. You sign up for Mandarin Chinese, Turkish, Spanish, or French classes with a child's enthusiasm on the first day of the summer holiday. The first two classes are great, but then "stuff" happens. Work gets hard. Friends come to visit. You don't hear the alarm, and you oversleep. And, in the end, your shiny new goal of learning a new language gets dusty. Many students start out eager to learn and, after a couple of classes, disappear off the face of the earth. The thing is, even if you think you're not going to be one of those, most students don't make it to the end of their studies. Don't let this happen to you! Remind yourself why you have chosen to study. Stick inspirational quotes on your computer or a mirror, talk about your goals with your family and friends, or imagine yourself - and how happy you will be - once you have achieved your goal.
Surround yourself with the culture of your chosen language. Eat its food, watch films, read about the country or countries where it is spoken, and look for news articles relating to current affairs in those countries.
Book a flight. In this way, you are committing yourself to travel, and you will need to feel confident in your chosen language as much as possible!
