What's the difference between motorway and highway (in British language - I don't mean the difference between British and American)???

In BrE a highway is the most direct way to sth,
and a motorway is a very wide road built for fast
long-distance travel.

I'm not so sure about such explanation. I found these expressions in different types of technical texts and they both regarded "autostrada" (I think) but I'm not sure if there are different types of "autostrada" in Britain, that they call it sometimes "motorway" and sometimes "highway" ...

Motorway means "autostrada" and is used especially in British English when somebody wonna say about a way which is between two towns. It is a very wide and fast road.

Highway isn't often used in British English. It's also way which joins one town to another. However I wouldn't say "highway" in England, cuz "motorway" is very more popular.
