Theories of FIRST LNG ACQUISITION:
1. BEHAVIOURIST
- lng learning is based on imitation and habit formation; people imitate until the form proper habits of lng use
2. INNATIST
- contribution of the environment (e.g. availability of ppl who speak to a child)
- children are'programmed' for learning lngs, lng develops in child the same the biological functions develop
3. INTERACTIONIST
- the role of the linguistic environment in interaction with the child's innate capacities for lng
Theories of 2nd LNG ACQ:
1. BEHAVIOURISM
- lng learning is based on imitation and habit formation;
- 2nd lng acquisition = acquisition of a set of habits (learners start offwith habits associated with the 1st lng)
2. COGNITIVE THEORY
- 2nd lng acquisition as builiding up of konwledge systems that can be called on automatically
3. CREATIVE CONSTRUCTION THEORY
- learners are believed to construct internal representation (mental pictures) of a lng
- learners do not need to speak or write to learn a lng; acquisition takes place internally as learners read or listen
