Great point of discussion, but let's not diimsss the idea of dialing back expectations. A great point was made that SROs are no longer a widely available option as housing providers have moved toward larger units with greater amenities. We in the 'affordable housing' industry have deluded ourselves with the idea of delivering Class 'A' properties at Class 'C' prices so low income households wouldn't be further marginalized. Tremendous idea, but it seems our egos are getting in the way of economic reality. We're at the vanguard of cutting edge technologies and green building standards without understanding how those ideals hold up over time or in the absence of behavior modification. What we've in fact created is an increasingly large demand for subsidy to deliver fewer units with larger financial gaps to fill at the time of development. This is further compounded when properties are in need of refreshment down the road when subsidies are even harder to obtain.More subtly, have we actually enshrined disincentives to move up the economic ladder if our clients would have to pay more for fewer amenities and less desirable locations if they moved out of subsidized housing?

They propose the notion that hidden variables will someday be found that generate these odd phenomena, just as observable variables generate macro-physical phenomena. However the current debate in physics turns out, maybe we could benefit from extending this notion of hidden variables to ourselves and others. The next time we see a homeless person on the street we could remind ourselves that hidden variables that we can know nothing of are contributing to his circumstances. Maybe we could drop the idea that some mysterious but inexplicable element of character flawed will power, for instance is responsible for the person's homelessness, and, instead trust that there are real, causal reasons at work in him even though we can't see what they are. If we posit hidden variables for the human attitudes and behaviors we see, our blame and shame game can finally come to an end. Hey, we lefties might even try extending this idea to right wing Republicans! EVERYTHING emerges out of context. ALL phenomena are consistent with their context in the way that the figure in an Escher drawing is consistent with the ground. One might say that the ground generates the figure. Maybe we could consider ourselves, and indeed all the phenomena of our reality as the figures of the elemental, generative ground. From the figure/ground perspective, there's an important point to keep in mind: Ground generates figure with absolutely PERFECT fidelity. If we understand this how can we moralize, mock, or belittle others (the figures in the ground of reality)? If we want to play with mere words, we might call the ground, God. From all appearances, God is fearless, blossoming from ground to figure without concern for the pleasantness of the outcome. And, there appears to be NECESSITY to God's business the necessity to explore every moment as it blossoms into fruition in the next (as it moves from ground to figure), be that next moment good, bad, or ugly. I believe that simply understanding that reality unfolds inexorably from ground to figure CAN CHANGE THE VERY GROUND. I believe ugliness will be minimized in future unfoldings if we hold this broad view. We can start with the simple understanding that there are hidden variables within the life of every person.
