In truth Jim Carrey has been in trouble ever since The Truman Show lifted him out of the comedy ghetto. Peter Weir made him an actor and not just a comic – and he hasn't recovered since. After Truman, the rubber-face routines that we got used to from The Mask onward sort of leave you cold. This is pretty much the case with Bruce Almighty, in which Carrey's TV presenter gets to play God after moaning about the Big Man Upstairs a tad too much. The result isn't that bad, and at times there are some of those sublimely stupid Carrey moments that outright force you to laugh, even if you hate yourself for it afterwards.
